Howard trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama.
Howard's current and recent theatre work includes MAMMA MIA! (London/Broadway and worldwide), MARY POPPINS (Broadway), ABIGAIL'S PARTY (Menier Chocolate Factory and West End), THE WAY OF THE WORLD (Chichester Festival Theatre), ANNA CHRISTIE (Donmar), PLAYBOY OF THE WESTERN WORLD (Old Vic), ROMEO AND JULIET (Royal Shakespeare Company), EARTHQUAKES IN LONDON (National Theatre), ME AND MY GIRL (Crucible Sheffield) and MACBETH (West End/Broadway). Other theatre work includes Tom Stoppard's ROCK 'N' ROLL (Royal Court/West End/Broadway), CREDITORS (Donmar and New York), INHERIT THE WIND and COMPLICIT (Old Vic), BUTLEY, BACKBEAT, LOVE STORY, GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS, LOVE SONG, GUYS & DOLLS, RAGTIME, DONKEYS' YEARS and HEROES (all West End), LOVE STORY, THE MUSIC MAN, HAY FEVER and THE CIRCLE (Chichester Festival Theatre), IN A DARK DARK HOUSE and THE LAST DAYS OF JUDAS ISCARIOT (Almeida).
For opera and dance, his work includes DIE FLEDERMAUS (Welsh National Opera), STRICTLY GERSHWIN and SWAN LAKE (English National Ballet at the Royal Albert Hall), and Matthew Bourne's NUTCRACKER and EDWARD SCISSORHANDS at Sadler's Wells and on tour in the UK and the US.
Howard was awarded the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Lighting Designer in 2008 for MACBETH at the Gielgud Theatre, and was nominated for an Olivier Award in 2012 for ANNA CHRISTIE at the Donmar. He has been twice nominated for Broadway's Tony Awards for MARY POPPINS and MACBETH.
